In 2012, the producers of Ballerina (Leap!) were faced with a challenge: how to produce a film with global reach, created with the standards of a major animation studio, at one fifth the cost.
They chose to base their production in Montreal, Canada, drawn to the city’s highly skilled talent pool, favorable exchange rate, and attractive tax credits. Realizing that a simple service house might not give them enough control to achieve their creative ambitions, they decided to build their own animation studio. Thus, from the seed of an international production challenge, L’Atelier Animation was born.
